Do you need to fast for a hormone test?
Many single-hormone blood tests don’t need fasting. Others do, and panels that include cholesterol or blood chemistry usually do. The rule that counts is the one on your lab order, so check it before the day.
This page shows what the sources say and what the seller’s own pages say, so you know what to expect. Where the seller’s wording looks like shared template text, we say so and don’t treat it as medical guidance.
What fasting means
MedlinePlus says fasting means you should not eat or drink anything except plain water for several hours before your test. It says you usually need to fast for 8 to 12 hours, and that your provider gives the exact time. MedlinePlus
It lists the tests that usually need fasting: blood glucose, cholesterol (lipid panel) and basic metabolic panels. Liver and kidney panels may too, depending on the order. A panel that bundles those with hormones is therefore likely to come with a fasting rule.

What the sources say, hormone by hormone
- Progesterone. MedlinePlus says you usually don’t need other preparation for a progesterone test and doesn’t mention fasting. It says you may need to know the first day of your last period.
- AMH. MedlinePlus says you don’t need any special preparation. It doesn’t mention fasting.
- Prolactin. MedlinePlus says you may be asked to fast for several hours, and that your provider will tell you whether you need to prepare. It schedules the draw three to four hours after you wake up.
- Testosterone. MedlinePlus says that in certain cases you may need to fast for several hours. A 2025 UK guideline on investigating androgen excess in women says those samples should be taken in the morning after an overnight fast. Society for Endocrinology
These sources don’t agree with each other on every test, and labs set their own rules. That is the reason your order is the final word.
What the seller’s pages say
The seller’s pages for its Basic and Comprehensive female hormone panels say fasting is required: no food or drink other than water for at least 8 hours before you visit the lab. They say that if you choose not to fast, results may be affected.
Its pages for single hormone tests, such as progesterone, AMH, FSH and LH, say fasting isn’t required. That sentence is the same wording the seller repeats across many pages, and it is not medical guidance. For these tests the helper above says “Follow your lab order”.
For some tests, including its Standard female panel, SHBG, DHEA and the bioidentical panel, the pages either don’t say or we couldn’t confirm the wording. We assert nothing for them. Follow your lab order.
If you slip up or take medicines
MedlinePlus says to tell your provider if you eat or drink before the test, since you may need to reschedule. It says to ask your provider whether to take your usual prescription and over-the-counter medicines before a fasting test, and not to stop any medicine unless your provider tells you to. MedlinePlus It also lists food and drink, medicines and supplements, hard exercise and having your period at the time of testing among the things that can affect results. MedlinePlus
Fasting is one part of preparing. Hormones such as progesterone also depend on where you are in your cycle. The test finder can narrow down which test fits your question.
